Storing And Displaying Fresh Goods : A Short Guide For Store Owners

Working in retail can be extremely rewarding and fresh produce plays a really important part in the retail industry. It’s important to make sure you look after fresh produce properly. For example, when you are displaying or storing fresh goods then you need to watch the temperature or else the goods might be damaged. You need to pay attention as if the temperature is too high, some goods might rot or spoil. Too cold and others might be frost damaged.

The sunlight is linked to temperature as fresh goods are left in the sun for too long, it can damage them due to an increase in the surrounding temperature. For example, florist’s stores often display flowers which might wilt if they are left in the sun for too long. Other goods might dry out and fresh food can end up going brown. This means that you should keep all fresh goods out of the sunlight as much as you can so they aren’t harmed.

Another important thing to remember with fresh produce is that they have sell-by dates, which need to be checked so you know that they are still safe. Make sure you check those goods that are in storage as well as on display as if they are coming up to their sell-by dates, you might need to change some goods around. This is so those items with shorter sell-by dates are sold first and you will have to throw away a lot less old produce.

This is linked to the idea of stock rotation. If you leave all your stock as it is on the shelf - particularly with items that don’t sell very quickly - then the items at the back might end up going out of date because they’re not sold fast enough. You should have procedures in place to check all the stock on the shelf regularly and rotate it so that products with upcoming sell-by dates are more likely to be sold before they go out of date.

Finally, when storing fresh goods you should always make sure that different types of produce are kept separately to avoid contamination. For instance, if you are storing different types of meat, you should always keep them apart from each other. You should also keep meat and fish away from other fresh produce such as vegetables or dairy products as bacteria can spread this way and potentially cause harm. They should also be displayed in separate places to avoid the risk of contamination while on the shelf.
